Mariners' Museum Special Lecture: African-Americans in the Workplace in the 1930's

Jeffreen Hayes and Professor Hollis Pruitt will work together to present this fascinating lecture on the influence of African-Americans on the workforce of Newport News during the 1930s. Ms. Hayes, a PhD candidate in American Studies at the College of William Mary, will address the interpretation of African-Americans in the visual arts with particular emphasis on the work of Thomas Skinner (whose murals are featured in the Building Better Ships exhibition). Prof. Pruitt, of Thomas Nelson Community College, will speak about the importance of African-American workers at the Newport News shipyard in the 1930s.
